Gutters

Gutters

Gutter maintenance protects your home from water damage and can help reduce pests and rodents. Clogged gutters can prevent water from draining and attract animals who nest there. This can cause serious issues, such as water damage and wood rot. Thankfully, it's very easy to prevent!

Contact the Trusty Toolbox team to take care of it.

Gutter Cleaning

Gutter cleaning may sound like a boring, unimportant job, but it's an essential aspect of home maintenance.

Disclaimer: Cleaning your home's gutters most likely involves climbing a ladder. This is a risky maneuver that leads to over 164,000 emergency room visits and 300 deaths in the U.S. each year. Your safest bet? Let the professionals handle it!

But, if you have Ladder Safety Training under your belt and you want to try cleaning your gutters yourself, this is what you should know about gutter cleaning.

When should I clean my gutters?

Although you can clean your gutters any time of year, our team has seen the most positive effects in two seasons: spring and fall. Since we can expect heavy rainfall in the South during the spring, it's important that water is able to run off without issues. In fall, leaves can block gutters and prevent water from flowing away.

How do I prepare for gutter cleaning?

First, locate your gutters. Your house could have them under each side of your roof but may sometimes only have them on the sides. Walk around your home and find out where and how many there are.

Once you've located the gutters, it's time to put on the right outfit and gather your equipment. We recommend overalls and gloves, a brush, a trowel or gutter scoop, a bucket (or two), and a ladder. It's also helpful to grab your garden hose for the last bits of cleaning.

How do I clean my gutters?

  1. Put all your tools in a bucket and attach it to your ladder where you can easily reach them.
  2. Squarely place your ladder on the side of your gutter that has the downspout. Make sure it's completely safe and sturdy before climbing up.
  3. Grab the second bucket and hang it near the top of your ladder. You'll use this to collect the leaves and debris from your gutter.
  4. Remove and clean your downspout strainer. Move debris out of the way to replace the strainer.
  5. Use your trowel or gutter scoop to remove debris from the gutter and place it in your bucket.
  6. Make your way to the closed side of your gutter, moving the ladder as you go.
  7. Once you've reached the end, you can detach your buckets and/or tools from the ladder and grab the garden hose.
  8. Flush the gutter with the garden hose, making sure all little bits of debris are removed (you can check the strainer over the downspout again to make sure it's clean). If water seems to stand in the gutter, it may not be angled correctly. Reach out to our team to fix this issue
  9. Check the downspout to make sure your water is draining correctly. If there seems to be a blockage, you can try and remove the clog by feeding the hose up the downspout from the ground with the water on at full pressure.

Gutter Installation

Gutter Installation

It can be easy to neglect the outside of your home when you have so much to keep up with inside as well, but when it comes to potential water damage, you don't want to take any risks with your outdoor maintenance. If you notice that your house doesn't have (working) gutters, your home may be susceptible to:

  • Roof damage—water pooling in/on your roof can cause issues with the structure
  • Foundation issues—water pooling around your home can cause cracks and weakening of your foundation
  • Landscaping problems—if water doesn't drain correctly, it can cause soil erosion
  • Rot and mold—dampness can cause damage inside and outside your house

Thankfully, Your Trusty Toolbox is here to help! We can take the measurements, order your gutters, and install them correctly. That way, you don't have to worry about getting on a ladder while operating power tools. We've got you!
